Tricia Levenseller is an American young adult novelist most popular for writing the “Daughter of the Pirate King” series of novels. She is originally from small town Oregon, though she currently lives in the Rocky Mountains of Utah with Rosy her ultra-bossy dog. She has a bachelor in Editing and English Language, and is just thrilled never to have to deal with textbooks ever again. When she is not reading or writing she loves playing volleyball, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and watching her fantasy and historical TV shows while snacking on popcorn. Her debut novel was “Daughter of the Pirate Queen” first published in 2017. Growing up, her heroines were the women in her life that included her aunt, grandmother, and mother who are still her heroines. These women are some of the strongest and most talented individuals she knows and is very close to, and hence it is not surprising that she wrote her debut novel featuring a strong female protagonist. As she grew older and got into books, she was inspired by the likes of Robin LaFevers, Rae Carson, Richelle Mead, Suzanne Collins, Tamora Pierce, and J.K. Rowling. The author write rounded out characters that inspired her to write a female character that had some of the best of female and male traits. She also derived much of the inspirations for her lead protagonist Alosa from Rose Hathaway of “Vampire Academy”. The strong, fierce, sharp witted, hit first ask questions later character has the most in common with Alosa.

Levenseller has always loved pirates ever since she watched the first movie in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. The boots, justaucorps coats, tricorne hats, telescopes, compasses, cutlasses, single shot pistols, cannons, and ships blew her away. Before that, Tricia had always loved historical fiction and thus going back in time to the Golden Age of sailing was an awesome adventure. In addition, the story was full of humor, romance, and adventure with cursed pirates, and a kidnapped romantic partner to be rescued. Having never been a real life pirate she got most of her material from research into pirates. Her research unearthed the story of Ching Shih, the Chinese female pirate that went from Chinese pirate to be captain of nearly 100, 000 pirates. She battled with and won a battle against three different governments, who finally had to offer her and her men a pardon and a lot of money to retire from piracy. Tricia was fascinated by the fact of women pirates that could be excellent captains, and talented swordsmen that could hold their own against men. She distilled these characteristics in her heroine Alosa. Similar to many authors, Tricia had the usual struggles trying to publish her novels. “Daughter of the Pirate King”, which was the first novel she ever published, was actually the fourth novel she wrote. She had written two other novels that were never accepted for publishing, and hence it was quite a nerve racking and finally delightful experience when the “Daughter of the Pirate King” was finally published in 2017.

Alosa the lead protagonist of the series is not the typical heroine. She is a beautiful, strong willed, ruthless, witty, manipulative, and cunning pirate that can take on anyone. She did not have the usual upbringing given that she was daughter to the Pirate King, the infamous pirate that terrorized the Caribbean for nearly a decade. She lived the rough life of punishment and endless training, which had made her ready for almost anything life could throw at her. She seems to always leave a bunch of dead bodies in her wake, and hence Alosa is not the typical moral heroine. Her foil and later lover is Riden a handsome, brave, clever, witty, smart, and loyal young pirate that is the best shot of the company. He serves as protector, interrogator, and later romantic interest to Alosa. Over the course of the novel series, his feelings for Alosa grow, which results into conflict with his older brother Draxen to whom he has always been loyal. Unlike most of the other pirates or his brother Draxen, Riden is a moral man who will not cross some redlines. He does not rush into confrontation preferring to read and observe his enemies first which makes him very successful in his endeavors. However, he also uses these skills to figure out Alosa’s intentions and better understand her.

“Daughter of the Siren Queen” opens to Alosa having completed one of the most dangerous missions she had ever undertaken. She had been sent by her father to the “Night Farer” to find and bring back missing pieces to a treasure map. If she can find the missing pieces, her crew would get access to untold wealth, and she would get the praise and approval she craved from her father. But she gets a hint from one of her perceived enemies, which makes her question her father, the man she has loved and trusted for as long as she can remember. The fleet, and most importantly Alosa and her father are embroiled in a vicious battle for the control of the high seas that will determine who dies or who lives. Riden who is Alosa’s love interest is always looming to prove adventure and distract the young Alosa. The crew of the ship “Ava-lee” also makes constant appearances offering support and cracking jokes. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if Alosa will manage to navigate the rough waters of conflict and attain control of the seas.

“Daughter of the Pirate King” is the debut novel by Tricia Levenseller. It highlights the peculiar and perilous life of piracy as the lead character Alosa is still on the search for an elusive and ancient treasure map. Alosa has to allow herself to be captured, and interrogated by her enemies over several days so that she can gain access to their ship. Given her excellent escape skills, she can always leave her prison cell at night and scour the ship for the missing map believed to be in one of the salons. To keep her captors in the dark about her intentions, she makes fake escape attempts every few days. But she cannot fool everyone as there is one handsome man named Riden that does not take her at face value. Riden is the brother to the Captain and first mate who has fallen for Alosa, though he is never blinded by her wiles and beauty. Nonetheless, they are intensely drawn to each other in the heat and humidity of the high seas. But Alosa must stick to her mission even as she is not averse to the stolen moments with Riden.
