Eater editors get asked one question more than any other: Where should I eat right now? While many people still consider Manhattan the locus of New York’s dining scene, some neighborhoods in Brooklyn have become dining destinations in their own right. On this map, you’ll find the latest Brooklyn debuts drawing NYC’s dining obsessives.
New to the list in June: Esse Taco, a taqueria from the owner of Cosme and Pujol; Strange Delight, focused on New Orleans seafood; and Theodora, from the chef behind Miss Ada.
For more New York dining recommendations, check out the new hotspots in Brooklyn and Queens. And for an insider’s perspective on how to eat well no matter where you are in NYC, pick up our new book: The Eater Guide to New York City.

Ever since Esse Taco opened in Williamsburg, there’s been a line out the door and around the corner. The taqueria, from Enrique Olvera, who owns the Mexican restaurants Cosme and Atla, serves just four tacos: rib-eye, al pastor, grilled chicken, and oyster mushroom ($5 to $6 each). The meats are sliced into thin slabs, rather than chopped into pieces, like at popular taquerias in Mexico City.

Who knew what this city needed was another Roberta’s Pizza? R Slice Pizza, located next to the original Roberta’s in Bushwick, describes itself as a New York slice shop. And while it makes a great plain slice, specialty pizzas are where it shines ($4 to $6 each). There’s a luxurious clam pie with garlic, cheese, and red chiles, and a slice topped with cold stracciatella and ’nduja called Fire and Ice.

A half-year after opening, Sailor in Fort Greene remains one of the toughest tables in town. The draw? “sensational” cooking from chef April Bloomfield, known for her work at the Spotted Pig and elsewhere. The restaurant, a partnershipwith restaurateur Gabriel Stulman, behind Manhattan hot spots Jeffrey’s Grocery and Fairfax, serves straightforward food, like an excellent roast chicken, that shows Bloomfield “at the top of her game.” Reservations are recommended.

Radio Kwara is the follow-up to Dept of Culture, Eater’s restaurant of the year in 2022. The team’s second restaurant is much easier to get into and every bit as delicious. The a la carte menu features goat pepper soup with noodles, a standout mushroom toast, and roasted guinea fowl. Radio Kwara is BYOB with no corkage fee, so stop by next-door wine shop Radicle on the way in.

There are probably a hundred different ways to have a meal at Strange Delight. You could sit at the bar alone and make a feast of its reasonably priced seafood towers for one. Or, you could come with a group and fill every inch of a table with foods from New Orleans, like hush puppies and charbroiled oysters. However you do it, be sure to order the restaurant’s fried seafood loaf, a great new sandwich of the year: It’s made with lettuce, tomato, and fried shrimp or oysters on milk bread.

Little Grenjai serves Thai takeout staples like drunken noodles and pad Thai, but it’s best known for its burger, which is only served at lunch. The smash burger comes with one or two patties, Thai basil, pickled peppers, and a spicy sauce for a unique combination that’s crunchy, greasy, and a little bit spicy. The small restaurant has about 30 seats with reservations for dinner available on Resy.

Theodora is laid out like a railroad apartment, and each section of the restaurant has a slightly different vibe. There’s the bar up front, where you can sip Mexican co*cktails, and a small counter in the middle, which overlooks the wood-fired oven. In the back, the dining room has a party vibe with loud music and big booths for groups. The menu is a bit of a departure from the team’s other restaurant, Miss Ada; it’s all about wood-fired seafood and homemade breads.

Swoony’s, from the owner of Cafe Spaghetti down the street, is an American restaurant with an old-school vibe: It’s located in a three-story house built in 1931 with an antique bar and a dining room that feels like a grandmother’s parlor. The menu is full of classics, too: There’s short rib au poivre, clams casino, and other bistro fare.

Daphne’s isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel — but it excels at making tasty Italian American food in a comfortable setting. The menu, from an owner of Decades pizzeria in Ridgewood, is full of remixed classics, like beef tartare with lasagna chips and swordfish Milanese.

Park Slope’s Sawa turns out compelling Levantine dishes that center around breads made in the restaurant’s oven. The menu is divided into four categories: dips, mezze, entrees, and sweets, with around 20 dishes. The hummus, kibbeh nayeh, and whole fish show off the best of the kitchen.
