I've loved magazines for as long as I can remember, which is what motivated me to study journalism in college. My proudest accomplishment since graduating has been landing a job in New York and moving to the city of my dreams. In my role at Apartment Therapy, I'm most passionate about making my home look organized and sophisticated and helping our readers do the same — often at a discount. Although I cover my fair share of newsy pieces and sale posts, my work focuses on long-form service articles that help our audience make informed shopping decisions. In my free time, I enjoy reading about fashion and design, watching reality TV, and exploring New York.

I Live With Two Cats, and the Litter-Robot’s New Accessory Solved One of My Most Annoying Problems (1)

Before I moved in with my current roommate, I had never cleaned a litter box before. But she owns two cats and travels somewhat frequently, so I finally had a go at it for the first time this spring when she was out of town. To be totally honest, I was expecting the task to be a gag-inducing nightmare, but thankfully, it wasn’t all that bad. The worst part was merely the frequency of the job. When she traveled for two weeks — the longest she’s been gone thus far — our other roommate and I alternated scooping days, so I ended up having to clean the box a total of one week. Each time, I found myself thinking there had to be a better way — it’s 2024, after all. As it turns out, there is, and it comes in the form of the self-cleaning Litter-Robot. In case you’re not familiar with this ingenious device, our former managing commerce editor reviewed the ultra-popular machine last year, noting that its design freed her from having to poop-scoop ever again.

My roommate got her own Litter-Robot a couple of months ago, and it has, indeed, been a game-changer. The only annoying bit of litter box scooping that was left over was the litter refills. But that problem is now solved, too! The Litter-Robot brand recently launched a new accessory, meaning you’ll rarely have to lug a heavy bag of litter from here on out. Suffice it to say, my roommate and I are both in love with the all-new LitterHopper.

What is the LitterHopper?

The most important thing to know about the LitterHopper is that it’s only compatible with the Litter-Robot 4, the latest version of the machine. The add-on holds up to 13 cups of litter at a time and automatically refills the robot’s globe when it senses that litter is low. My roommate has the Litter-Robot app, so she already knew when the machine’s waste drawer needed to be emptied. Now, she can also monitor how much litter is left in the hopper and be alerted when it needs to be filled again. Whereas she used to have to refill her cats’ old litter box about once a week, now she doesn’t have to do it nearly as often. Another important thing to know is that if you already own the Litter-Robot 4, you’ll have to dispose of its old bonnet, or the part that covers the back, because that’s where your new hopper will go. “I definitely didn’t expect to entirely replace the hood,” my roommate Celeny said. “It comes with a whole new hood, and that became a good opportunity to clean out the inside of the machine.” That being said, if you buy the Litter-Robot and the hopper together, you won’t have to do that. The hopper comes in black or white and is currently available for sale, but it won’t ship until the end of July.

Why I Love the LitterHopper

My roommate received and installed her LitterHopper on July 15, which was more than a week ago at the time of this review’s publication. She told me that she hasn’t had to refill it so far and that the litter volume has only dropped an inch since then. “It has only dispensed litter a few times since that day, but it’s at optimal capacity,” she said after checking the app. As for the installation of the hopper, Celeny said it was intimidating at first, but the video guide was helpful. Since then, it’s been smooth sailing. “It’s really quiet; I haven’t heard it dispense at all,” Celeny added. “The relief from not holding the mental space to remember to check in on the litter is refreshing! I also don’t have to worry about asking you guys to come in and refill it when I’m traveling.”

As someone who dreads lifting heavy objects, I also appreciate the LitterHopper. Not only was it a pain to drag a 30-pound bag of litter from the storage closet to Celeny’s room if I was on duty to refill the old box, but trying to pour new litter into the box was also difficult. If the bag was still pretty full, I’d always come close to accidentally tipping it all the way over and pouring litter all over the floor. With this brilliant new accessory, cat owners (and their roommates) will never have to bother with such frustrating chores again. If you ask me, the peace of mind alone makes the hopper totally worth the buy.

FAQs

Can I have one Litter-Robot for 2 cats? ›

You really can't do much better in terms of cleanliness. In fact, Litter-Robot, the highest-rated self-cleaning litter box, is suitable for up to 4 cats and features a large waste drawer, meaning you are not just scooping less, you're also cleaning less.

Can 2 cats share a self cleaning litter box? ›

Yes, cats can share a single litter box but it is not recommended in a multi-cat household. Cats can be territorial, and some may not feel comfortable sharing a litter box with other cats. This can lead to territorial disputes and reluctance to use a shared box.

Are automatic litter boxes good for multiple cats? ›

Overall, the Litter-Robot 4 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for an automatic litter box for multiple cats. It is easy to use, easy to maintain, and very durable. So if you're tired of cleaning your cats' litter box every day, the Litter-Robot 4 is definitely worth considering.

How often should I change the litter in my Litter-Robot? ›

If you have one cat, you will typically empty the waste drawer once per week. If you have more than one cat using Litter-Robot, you will typically empty the waste drawer twice every seven to ten days. Perform a full cleaning and litter change every one to three months.

Is it OK to have 1 litter box for 2 cats? ›

Yes, cats can share a litter box—but with some important caveats! Multiple cats can share multiple litter boxes, but multiple cats should not share one litter box. Each cat does not need their own personal litter box, but in your home there should be as many litter boxes as you have cats, plus one extra litter box.

Can I use Pretty Litter in my Litter-Robot? ›

Yes, PrettyLitter has been used with Litter Robot. PrettyLitter customers who have purchased a Litter Robot and recommend it suggest setting the cycle wait time to 7-15 minutes for best results.

Will two cats poop in the same litter box? ›

While some cats may be comfortable sharing, others may get territorial and prefer separate boxes. Providing multiple litter boxes in different locations around your home can help prevent conflicts and offer each cat their own space.

Where to put litter boxes for two cats? ›

If you have more than one cat, provide litter boxes in several locations so that one cat can't ambush another cat using the litter box. If you keep the litter box in a closet or a bathroom, be sure the door is wedged open from both sides to prevent your cat from being trapped inside or locked out.

Do cats dislike sharing litter boxes? ›

Territorial behavior: Two cats can live peacefully in the same home, but your kitties may want spaces that are just their own. Cats may refuse a shared litter box, and if this happens, you could end up finding urine or feces in other parts of your home.

What are the disadvantages of an automatic litter box? ›

We don't recommend buying an automatic litter box because, generally, they're expensive, they're loud, their scoops can get gunky or clogged, some models take 30 minutes to 1 hour to scoop, the litter beds are tiny, and the sensors don't work for cats that weigh less than 5 pounds.

Can you use crystal litter in a Litter-Robot? ›

Litter-Robot works well with almost any clumping or scoopable litter. Litter beads and crystals that are small enough to pass through the screen will also work. Litter-Robot is not compatible with litters that are strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellets.

What is the difference between Litter-Robot 3 and 4? ›

While the two self-cleaning litter boxes operate similarly, they have some notable differences in terms of design and features. In short, the Litter-Robot 4 is an upgraded version of the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, with advanced safety sensors, a more sophisticated (and quieter) sifting system and better odor control.

Is one Litter-Robot enough for 2 cats? ›

We recommend up to 4 indoor cats per single Litter-Robot; however, we do have customers with more cats using a single unit. As a rule of thumb, one cat using Litter-Robot 3 requires that the drawer be emptied once per week; two cats, twice per week; three cats, every other day, and so on.

Can I hose down my Litter-Robot? ›

Clean the globe with Litter-Robot Cleaner Spray or Cleaner Wipes, or with water and a mild soap. There are no electronic components in the globe that can be damaged by soap and water. If the globe has become extremely dirty, it can be soaked and cleaned with a water hose.

What happens when Litter-Robot gets full? ›

The unit will cycle two additional times before it will no longer automatically cycle. If your unit displays a flashing blue light bar, this indicates that the waste drawer needs to be emptied. Emptying the waste drawer when indicated is important to ensure that your Litter-Robot continues to cycle automatically.

Can two people connect to Litter-Robot? ›

If others in your household want to use the app, they can simply download the app to their device and log in with the same account. Will Litter-Robot 4 connect to my WiFi network?

Can you keep two cats from the same litter? ›

But once you're looking at a litter of fluffy kittens, bringing home just one can be challenging. So, why not adopt two? Adopting two kittens from the same litter is an excellent idea! They have already formed a strong bond since birth and are likely to have a playmate for life, although this is not always the case.

Can two cars use the same litter box? ›

And when they are doing something as private as elimination, sharing the same litter box can be stressful for some cats. Ideally, a multi-cat household should have the same number of litter boxes as the number of cats, plus one extra box; in other words, for two cats, there should be three litter boxes.

How much litter do I need for 2 cats? ›

A common interspecies family house rule: have one cat litter box for every cat in the house, plus one extra. Fill each box with 2 inches of clumping cat litter, then scoop at least once a day.
