Ensure proper placement

Your Litter-Robot comes fully assembled and ready to use. Get started by following the steps below.

  1. If possible, place Litter-Robot in the same location as the old litter box (at least during transition).
  2. Make sure the unit is on a firm, level surface in a cool, dry location.
  3. If the unit is placed on carpet or uneven flooring, you will need to use our Carpet Tray accessory to improve the accuracy of weight readings.
  4. Locate the unit near a power outlet. Ensure the unit isn’t pushed against a wall or into a corner.
  5. Place litter mats or rugs in front of the unit.

Add litter

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (34)

Add clumping litter

Litter-Robot’s litter sifting system requires clumping litter. Note: Translucent or white-coloured litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (35)

What not to use

DO NOT use litters that are strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellets.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (36)

Don’t overfill

Fill the globe through the opening until the litter is slightly below the raised fill line when spread flat (about 3.6-4.5 kg by weight). Be careful not to overfill the globe.

Power on and initial clean cycle

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (37)

Plug it in

Plug the small end of the power supply into the socket on the back of the base. Then plug the AC/DC adapter into a wall outlet.

Initial clean cycle

Press the Power button on the control panel. Litter-Robot will perform an initial clean cycle that will last 2 minutes. (Note: During the initial clean cycle, the cat sensor weight scale is disabled to ensure proper calibration.)

How the clean cycle works

When your cat exits, a timer counts down, allowing litter to clump before a clean cycle begins:

2

During the clean cycle, the globe slowly rotates. The patented sifting process separates the clumps from the clean litter.

3

The clumps are deposited into a sealed waste drawer below.

The globe returns to the home position, leaving a clean bed of litter for the next use.

Simply empty the waste drawer when indicated by the app or the control panel, and add litter as needed.

Screens may vary as app gets updated.

Introducing your cat to Litter-Robot

Most likely, your cat will quickly adapt to Litter-Robot. When using in automatic mode, be sure your cat or kitten weighs at least 1.36 kg—the weight scale will not recognize cats weighing less than 1.36 kg.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (47)

Location is key

Place Litter-Robot in the same location as the current litter box, set it up, and make sure it is turned off. Give your cats a day or two to explore Litter-Robot.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (48)

Familiar scents

Add a scoop of litter from the old litter box to Litter-Robot to provide a familiar scent for your cat.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (49)

Use treats

Place treats around Litter-Robot so your cat associates rewards with the unit.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (50)

Introduce the clean cycle

Once your cat has used Litter-Robot, power it on with your cat present so they become familiar with the motion and noise while you’re there to reassure them. Turn the unit off again after it cycles.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (51)

Make the old litter box less attractive

Go as long as possible without cleaning the old litter box (but be sure to closely monitor your cat's litter box activity). Cats prefer a clean litter box and a dirty litter box might persuade them to use the clean Litter-Robot.

Getting Started with Litter-Robot 4 (52)

Say goodbye to scooping

Once your cats are consistently using Litter-Robot, you can turn the unit on and leave it on to operate in automatic mode.

Empty the waste drawer when indicated

Empty the waste drawer when indicated by the app or the flashing blue light on the control panel. How often you empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. For two average-sized cats, twice per week is typical. For a single cat, once per week is usually sufficient.

To empty the waste drawer, simply pull out the waste drawer, gather the edges of the liner bag, and dispose. To install a new liner or trash bag, wrap the opening over the perimeter of the waste drawer. Push the remainder of the bag into the bottom of the waste drawer.

Add litter as needed

How often you add litter depends on how many cats use Litter-Robot and how frequently they use it. Litter-Robot uses litter very efficiently since the patented sifting mechanism only removes the clumps. We recommend checking the litter level each time you empty the waste drawer. If the litter is below the raised MAX fill line inside the globe, add just enough litter to meet the line.

FAQs

How long does the Litter-Robot 4 take to process? ›

It can be set for 3, 7, 15, 25, or 30 minutes. The default cycle delay is 7 minutes. This feature is also available in the Whisker app. You can reduce the cycle delay if it is important to minimize odor and/or the time that waste is available to other pets, such as dogs.

How often do you need to empty Litter-Robot 4? ›

Empty the waste drawer when indicated by the light bar flashing blue on the control panel. How often you will need to empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. For two average-sized cats, twice per week is typical. For a single cat, once per week is usually sufficient.

How much litter to put in Litter-Robot 4? ›

Fill the Globe through the circular opening with clumping litter until it meets the raised MAX Fill Line when spread flat—approximately 8-10 pounds (3.6-4.5 kg) by weight or 1 gallon (4L) by volume. TP-Link Kasa lights will turn fuschia when the Litter-Robot waste drawer is full.

How many cats can Litter-Robot 4 handle? ›

The Litter-Robot 4 is cleared for up to four cats, but the more cats you have, the more often you will be emptying the waste receptacle. For four cats you might actually want to try having two boxes and both can be simultaneously connected to the Whiskers app.

How often should my Litter-Robot cycle? ›

Litter-Robot cycles 7 minutes after each use, but if the wait time is interrupted by another cat entering, the timer will reset for another 7 minutes, which could cause waste to be present in the litter for longer than 7 minutes.

Do you need WiFi for Litter-Robot 4? ›

Litter-Robot 4 requires a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal and IPv4 or IPv6 addressing (5 GHz band not supported). * SmartScale™ technology to record cat weight is most accurate on a firm surface, not carpeting.

Can Litter-Robot 4 be on carpet? ›

Litter-Robot 4: Carpet tray installation guide

If your Litter-Robot 4 sits on carpet thicker than 3mm(1/8 inch), you can improve the accuracy of SmartScale™ weight readings by placing our specially designed carpet tray between the unit and the floor.

Does Litter-Robot 4 need special litter? ›

Litter-Robot works well with almost any clumping or scoopable litter. Litter beads and crystals that are small enough to pass through the screen will also work. Litter-Robot is not compatible with litters that are strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellets.

Which is best Litter Robot 3 or 4? ›

In short, the Litter-Robot 4 is an upgraded version of the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, with advanced safety sensors, a more sophisticated (and quieter) sifting system and better odor control.

How do I get my Litter-Robot to cycle? ›

Press and Release: Pressing the Cycle Button starts the Litter-Robot cleaning cycle. In order to pause the cycle, press any button on the Control Panel during the Clean Cycle. Press Cycle once again to resume the cleaning cycle.

How to turn Litter-Robot 4 online? ›
